January News

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their vacation and found time to relax and celebrate with family and friends. I want to say thanks to everyone that helped with our class party in December. The kids always look forward to our parties and have a wonderful time. Here’s what’s happening in January:

Math:  This month we continue our study of multiplication and division, which includes learning and memorizing the multiplication facts to 10.  Practicing the multiplication facts to ten daily will help build fluency. There are games available on Montair’s Wikipage. The Wikipage link can be found at the bottom of the School Loop home page. Students can also use Dreambox. I recommend making this a part of your child’s nightly homework.

Social Studies: We will continue our study of Native Americans by learning about the Bay Miwok. The Tatcan, who were a part of the larger Bay Miwok group, lived in our valley. Our study of geography will tie into our study of Native Americans as we learn how the natural resources of an area determined the food, shelter, tools, etc. of each tribe. We will also use our computer skills to create a Google slide show about the Miwok.

Science: We are currently in the middle of of our study of forces, motion, and magnets.

Writer’s Workshop: This month we begin our narrative unit of study. We continue to use our writer's notebook to brainstorm and organize our ideas for writing. While students will continue to write about several topics in their notebook, we will only choose a few topics to take through the entire writing process, ending in a final draft. Our purpose in this unit of study, is to write about a "small moment" filled with rich description, rather than merely a list of events. We will use the skills learned earlier this year to compose single and multiple paragraph pieces.

Reader's Workshop:

We move on to character study this month. During this unit we will learn about character traits, how a character can change during a story, and how a character's traits can drive the plot of a story.

Please remember to “help” your child to remember when homework, recorders, library books and the Red Folders are due. Thanks for all your help and support. As always, if you have any questions please let me know. I look forward to beginning a new year with the kids!
